What Is an IP Address?

Definition

An IP address is a unique number assigned to a device connected to the internet. It allows devices to send and receive data across networks.

Types of IP Addresses

1. IPv4

  • Format: `192.168.0.1`
  • 32-bit address space
  • Still the most widely used version

2. IPv6

  • Format: `2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334`
  • 128-bit address space
  • Designed to solve IPv4 exhaustion

Public vs Private IP

Public IP

  • Reachable on the internet
  • Assigned by an ISP
  • Used for websites and servers

Private IP

  • Used inside local networks
  • Assigned by a router
  • Common ranges: `192.168.x.x`, `10.x.x.x`

What You Can Learn from an IP Address

  • General location such as country or region
  • ISP or network provider
  • Connection type such as home, mobile, or business
Note: An IP address alone does not reveal an exact home address or personal identity.
